<p style="text-align: justify;">In the study were evaluated the eating habits of almost 1300 women who had no cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the investigation and reviewed the thickness of the arterial intima-media layers of the carotid artery. This measure of the carotid artery is a good predictor of preclinical heart disease.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Ls The research found that women who were empty-calorie dietary pattern had a thickness of the intima-media significantly elevated (1.46 mm) compared with women who had healthy dietary patterns for the heart (1.18 mm), a few foods ( 1.22 mm) and high-fat (1.17 mm).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This association remained significant even after controlling for other risk factors like smoking, cholesterol, body mass index and systolic blood pressure (top number when assessing blood pressure)</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A diet high in &#8220;empty calories&#8221; includes foods whose main component is the energy they bring to our body, such as high intake of total and saturated fat, high intake of sugars as desserts, sugary drinks and snacks, low intake of fruits and vegetables and low levels of protective micronutrients.</p>
