A high intake of meat increases cancer risk

A high intake of meat increases cancer riskHealth researchers from the U.S. government reported that eating 113 grams or a quarter pound of red and processed meat daily increases the risk for a variety of cancers. The more you eat meat the higher the risk, concluded researchers at the National Cancer Institute.

The study author Amanda Cross said that red and processed meats have been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer, therefore, we investigated whether this association was also evident for cancers in other anatomic sites.

For the study included red meat from beef, pork and lamb. Processed meats included bacon, bacon, red meat sausage, turkey sausage or chicken, ham, sausage, ham, sausages for hot dogs and low-fat regular.

Cross and his team from the National Institutes of Health and the AARP analyzed health data from 500,000 people aged between 50 and 71 years of age in the study of health and diet of the National Institutes of Health-AARP that began between 1995 and 1996.

Participants were followed over nearly 8 years, during which there were 53,396 cases of cancer. In addition, the assessed reported their lifestyle choices like smoking and exercise habits and eating meat.

The lowest category of consumption of red meat consumption was equivalent to approximately 3 thin slices of ham or less per day. The highest category consisted of those individuals who consumed the equivalent of a quarter pound (113 grams) of hamburger or a small steak or a pork chop day.
