Care Worker Duties in Private Homes

A care worker is part of a wider profession known as social care, or care in the community. Those interested in the job of providing care in a persons home often wonder what exactly the duties are. Really, they are quite simple and involve doing tasks that you routinely do everyday for yourself or your child. Now, you help a disabled or elderly person perform these same tasks for themselves.

Providing care for individuals in their own home is different from client to client. Each person will need a different level o help. Your goal as a care worker is to encourage the person to be as independent as possible. Social care involves helping to teach people to maintain their dignity by performing as many of their routine tasks of daily living as possible at home, without having to move to a residential care facility.

Duties assigned to a care worker typically involve helping individuals perform personal care routines such as bathing and and helping the client prepare and eat regular meals. Other duties can include light housekeeping and laundry, or accompanying your client for walks or doctors appointments.

Training is often provided to new social care workers. While most people know how to bathe and prepare meals, the training stresses the safest way to help your client who may have physical or mental disabilities. Those who have cared for an elderly parent have already performed all the tasks the ob requires. Common sense, and the belief in basic human dignity are essential, the rest can be learned.
